UNDERSTANDING MIGRAINE
What is happening in a Migraine?
Migraine is a primary headache disorder involving recurring attacks, usually lasting for 4-72 hours and involving pain of moderate to severe intensity, often with nausea, sometimes vomiting, and/or sensitivity to light, sound, and other sensory stimuli.
The Aura
Visual disturbance starts in one eye and may spread to both. Geometric patterns and hallucinations may occur. Numbness can start in the hand and move up the arm before involving the face, lips and tongue. Sensitivity to light often follows.
The Migraine Attack
A wave of neurological activity releases hormones in a sequence of events, causing blood vessels to dilate and contract. The result is a throbbing, pounding headache, often with nausea and vomiting, and sensitivity to light.
How It Feels
The pain can be one of the worst possible. Many describe feeling bruising in the places where the pain was felt most. Around 20% experience a warning aura, with effects such as vision changes, ziggaps and other phenomena — some say they're just a funny feeling.
Common Triggers
These are the most common triggers of Migraine:
- Stress or even relaxation after stress
- Bright lights and loud noise
- Long distance travel and extremes of weather
- Excess usage of VDU screens
- Anxiety or depression
- Trauma to the head or neck
- Dietary factors including chocolate, citrus fruits, fortified meats
- Missed meals
- Dehydration
- Sleep deprivation or excessive sleep
- Alcohol (especially red wine)
- Oral contraceptives and vasodilators
- Chinese food, or food containing Sodium Glutamate
- In some circumstances, there does not have to be a direct trigger.
HOW HYPNOTHERAPY CAN HELP
A Practical, Supportive and Personal Approach
In practice, many people get migraine almost every day, and the duration seems to be almost continual, with varying degrees of migraine present.
After a migraine, there can be a feeling of bruising in the places where the pain was felt most. Most migraine sufferers feel weird the following day, and some feel so ill that they have to stay at home while they recover.
Hypnotherapy and NLP can help you take control by addressing the triggers and breaking the cycle. It requires patience and dedication. Over time the frequency of attacks will decrease, and when an attack happens, the duration will be minimal.
You will be taught a procedure to use at home between sessions, and telephone support is included as part of the process.
Fewer Painkillers
Reduce your reliance on pain relief and find a more natural approach.
